There comes a time when actions are needed. We as a society and a field are driven by “data”. We need them to rationalize and justify taking action. In advanced and above ability academics the data are what the data are. We now “know” that we are missing more marginalized students than we are identifying. We know that from sea to shining sea Black, Latino, and Indigenous children are shamefully being left behind. As cities from San Francisco and Oakland to Boston, to Miami and New Orleans cities are gentrifying Black and Brown neighborhoods. What impact does (dis)investment in poor communities mean for finding and serving the already dismally served populations? The time for riding the fence of indecision, talking about the issues has passed. Dr. Whiting is asking that we roll up our sleeves and put our hands on the plow.
