This interactive session presents strategies for teaching the icons of depth and complexity and literary concepts required by the CCSS as well as for the development of critical thinking skills. Using cartoons from sources such as The New Yorker, Calvin and Hobbs, The Far Side, and others, this session will demonstrate how reading and interpreting cartoons promotes critical thinking and metacognition by making conscious students' previous knowledge (the importance of which has been well-documented), paving the way to understanding abstract literary concepts.
